Sitting atop Marpo Ri hill in Lhasa (Tibet), Potala Palace was the former residence of the Dalai Lama and is now a Chinese museum.
It was built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century and got its name from Mt. Potala - the mythological mountain abode of the Avalokiteśvara. It was included in the UNESCO Wordl Heritage list in 1994.
